Appendix 2:  LANDRANGER COVER EVIDENCE

Transition from type 1 to type 2

The first type 2 cover recorded on a newly published Landranger edition enclosed sheet 204 First Series edition A/* when issued in April 1980. Three other new editions published the same month were issued in type 1 covers.

10 new editions were published in May 1980, of which 9 were in type 2 covers, only sheet 201 First Series edition A/* being issued in a type 1 cover. By contrast, the 4 new editions issued in June 1980 saw 3 in type 1 covers and only sheet 26 Second Series edition A in type 2.

From July 1980 all new editions appeared in type 2 covers.

Since the edition and the cover type were unrelated it is possible that type 2 was used on existing maps prior to April and type 1 after July 1980, but the transition seems to have been swift. This may reflect relatively rapid turnover and low levels of stocks of covers. For example sheet 133 First Series edition A of 1974 is found in cover type 2, prior to its replacement by Second Series edition A which was issued in September 1980.

Transition from type 2 to type 3 [provisional - needs further consideration]

The first type 3a covers recorded on newly published Landranger editions are on 7 sheets issued in March 1985. However, while 5 of the 6 other new editions published the same month retain type 2 covers, sheet 66 Second Series edition A/*//*/* was issued in a type 3b cover.

From April 1985, all new editions were published in type 3 covers, the split being types 3a and 3b being as follows:

From August 1986, all new editions were issued in type 3b or later covers.

The conclusion is that between early 1985 and mid 1986 cover types 3a and 3b were being issued concurrently rather than consecutively. It also seems that type 3a will only ever have been used on a minority of sheets - to date, 31 are known.

Transition from type 3 to type 4

The first type 4 cover recorded on a newly published Landranger edition was on sheet 157 Second Series edition A2 issued in February 1993.

However, the transition from type 3 to type 4 took two years, as the table below demonstrates:
